COACH'S CLIPBOARD 📋: Two Dribbles, Two Feet 🏀

A basketball drill that makes every kid dribble, pass and shoot in the same rep — and fixes the pass they throw a half-second too early.

COACH'S CLIPBOARD 📋: Two Dribbles, Two Feet 🏀

In partnership with

Good morning and Happy Hump Day ☀️🐪 Wednesday is Clipboard day 📋: one drill, diagrammed, ready to run tonight. Today: basketball.

Basketball half-court diagram of a three-player drive-and-kick drill. Player 1 drives from the right corner on two dribbles into the paint and lands on both feet, kicks the ball out to player 2 on the right wing, who swings one more pass to player 3 at the top of the key, who shoots. A gray dashed line shows the same pass thrown off one foot, sailing past player 2 and out over the sideline.

Two dribbles in, land on both feet, kick it short. The gray line is the same pass thrown a half-second early.

Two Dribbles, Two Feet — three players, one ball, one basket, no defense. Ten minutes.

Run it: Three spots — right corner with the ball, right wing, top of the key.

The corner attacks the gap between two spots, two dribbles, not five, and gets into the paint. Then the part they skip: lands on both feet at once, square to the rim, before doing anything else. Now the kick, and it goes to the nearest open teammate on the wing. The wing swings it one more to the top. The top shoots it. Rotate a spot, rebound, go again.

Coaching point: The landing is the drill. Breakthrough Basketball's drive-kick-swing notes put it plainly: "Play off two feet on dribble penetration so you can be balanced and make accurate passes."

A ten-year-old who passes off one foot is still moving when the ball leaves his hand, and it sails a yard past the wing every time. Two feet, then pass. (Breakthrough Basketball)

Why it works: The youth default is drive until you're stuck, then throw it blind. Two dribbles stops the over-dribble, two feet stops the falling-away pass, and the short kick stops the cross-court turnover .

Three habits in one rep, and every kid dribbles, passes and shoots on the way through it.
