One thing we'd actually use, and why it earns the pick.

A game-day fuel kit for youth athletes: two pouches, five items in each.

Pregame is an energy bar, pretzels, applesauce, a hydration stick and dried fruit, meant for 60 to 90 minutes before the whistle.

Recovery is built the same way with protein added, for the 30-to-60-minute window after (fuelboxx.com). Built for ages 8 to 18 with sports dietitian Jessica Isaacs, MS, RD, CSSD: no artificial sweeteners, no synthetic dyes, no caffeine, and a gluten-free option. Gayle Jones, a four-time Emmy-winning sports television producer, founded the company in Los Angeles and launched it in July. The pitch to clubs, tournaments and schools is that the pouches arrive ready to hand out, so nobody on staff assembles anything.

$15 for Pregame or Recovery on fuelboxx.com, Regular or Gluten-Free, 5% off on a monthly subscription. Clubs, tournaments and facilities get volume pricing by quote, and the 12-bar Evaluation Box is $29.99, credited in full toward a program's first bulk order. Try FuelBoxx β†’

Coming up: Gayle sat down with us for the first guest episode of THE FACEOFF podcast πŸŽ™οΈ β€” why selling to parents broke and selling to programs didn't, what's actually in the pouch, and the line item she says youth sports professionalized everything around and then skipped. It's edited and on its way. Be on the lookout, and stay tuned.
